Pain or Progress will explore both sides of industrial expansion in agricultural communities. The presenter, Dr. Richard Shaten, will discuss the impact of wind farms, mega farms, retail expansion, and highway construction in our communities. A question and answer session will follow Dr. Shaten’s presentation.

Richard Shaten has a Ph.D. in Land Resources from the University of Wisconsin, masters’ degrees in Agriculture and Applied Economics, Civil and Environmental Engineering, and Energy Analysis and Policy. He is Chair of the Economics Department at Madison Area Technical College and teaches Environmental Economics.

A high school essay contest with the Boyer Colloquium 2008 theme will be held this year. High schools students should attend this event for details about the video, photo and written essay contest. A total of $1,200 in cash prizes will be awarded. For more information about the contest, call 815.599.3457.

The Boyer Colloquium, an annual event sponsored by the late Dr. M. E. Boyer, was created in 1994 to help students understand the importance of the inter-relationships between ethics, economics, and ecology.

Campus maps are available at here and directional signage will be posted the evening or the event.
