Which periodicals are online at HCC?

Off campus students, you will need to use your library barcode number to access the databases.

 

When you select a topic area on the left, you will see the list of databases which cover the topic you have selected.  Each of the databases is described briefly.  A few of our databases are broad enough in subject coverage that they are recommended for several different categories.  Try the databases that look the most useful.

The world’s largest academic multi-disciplinary database, Academic Search Premier provides full text for nearly 4,700 publications, including full text for more than 3,600 peer-reviewed journals. NoveList is a great resources for finding good fiction reading.  It provides subject heading access, reviews, annotations, and much more for over 125,000 fiction titles. It also includes other content of interest to fiction readers, such as Author Read-alikes, What We’re Reading, Book Discussion Guides, BookTalks, and Annotated Book Lists.

Primary Search

Primary Search provides full text for more than 60 popular, magazines for elementary school research. All full text articles included in the database are assigned a reading level indicator (Lexiles), and full text information dates as far back as 1990. This database is updated daily.

EBSCO Animals

Provides in-depth information on a variety of topics relating to animals. The database consists of indexing, abstracts, and full text records describing the nature and habitat of familiar animals.

Historical New York Times

Full page and article images with searchable full text back to the first issue in 1851. To search select "Historical New York Times" from the ProQuest search drop box.

Chicago Tribune Historical Archives

Images and full text of historical local, regional, national, and international issues and events including major wars, prohibition, Chicago gangsters, the Great Depression, inventions, sports, and the arts from the Chicago Tribune Morgue clippings file. Extensive front page coverage.

Illinois Sanborn Maps

Digital Sanborn Maps of most Illinois towns and cities from 1867 - 1970. The maps contain information such as street names; property boundaries; building uses, size and materials; house and block numbers. Extensive information on building uses is given including details on commercial property, who owned it and when. Even individual rooms and the uses to which they are put are recorded on some maps. Maps were created by the Sanborn Map Company, a primary American publisher of fire insurance maps for nearly 100 years. Digital versions of the map can be viewed, magnified, and layered over different years. Maps were created every five to ten years, showing the progress of the nation over time. They are of interest to local historian, genealogists, city planners, environmentalists, geographers, architects and others interested in the history, growth and development of Illinois cities, towns and neighborhoods.

ProQuest Nursing & Allied Health Source provides abstracting and indexing for more than 780 titles, with over 650 titles in full-text, plus more than 11,000 full text dissertations representing the most rigorous scholarship in nursing and related fields.

MEDLINE

Citations & Abstracts from research journals covering all areas of medicine, including dentistry and nursing. This is not a full-text database, but it is a critical resource in medical research. If you would like the full-text of an article cited in Medline, speak to the library staff.

Health Source Consumer

With Health Source - Consumer Edition you can search for information on many health topics including the medical sciences, food sciences and nutrition, childcare, sports medicine and general health. Health Source -Consumer Edition features searchable full text for over 190 journals including Consumer Reports on Health and Men's Health, as well as abstracts and indexing for over 205 general health, nutrition and professional health care publications.

Health Source Nursing

This database provides nearly 600 scholarly full text journals focusing on many medical disciplines. Health Source: Nursing/Academic Edition also features abstracts and indexing for nearly 850 journals. This database is updated on a daily basis.

Thomson Micromedex & Carenotes

Thomson Micromedex & Carenotes are substantial databases which may be of interest to you. "Micromedex" is wide range of clinical databases including unbiased, referenced information about drugs, toxicology, diseases, acute care, and alternative medicine. "Carenotes" is complete, easy-to-understand information for patients about all aspects of their care, medications and health, in English or Spanish.

     The daily online Chronicle issue is available only from computers on the Highland campuses.  The text of Chronicle articles is searchable off campus via Academic Search Premier.
